Huge press of people while the selling ot the „cathedral-stollen“ in the pedestrian zone
Hildesheim (bph) When are you served at the bar at least by a bishop or a minister of state? All their hands full had Norbert Trelle and Eckart von Klaeden in the Hildesheim pedestrian zone at the selling of the Hildesheim „cathdral-stollen“ from „Godi's Backstube“ in Hildesheim-Ochtersum. The customers nearly pulled the 2.000 sweet pieces out of their hands. The proceeds are determined for the cathedral-restoration.

Church is a mystery, but even more it is Höwelings cathedral-stollen. „Secret ingredients“ the buying list simply says, which besides is very impressive: About 1.07 millions raisins, 250 kilograms flour, 150 kilograms butter and 24 kilograms spices were mixed up in the ovens of „Godi's Backstube“ into a delicious ensemble, which shall please the palates of the Hildesheim residents and shall remember of the cathedral-restoration. For bakermeister Höweling wants to donate the return on sales to the cathedral-constructionsociety.
Therefor he and his assistants worked flat out during the past weeks and at least the bakermeister had to use his money sock. The ovens were hot six weeks long. The ingredients are estimated to have cost over 5.000 euros, he calculated. But is was a good value for him, now he can claim to have baked the world-largest christmasstollen made from one hand, unless not in one piece, because it had never fit into any oven at all. „Namely the stollen in Dresden is bigger, but there 75 bakeries are involved“, Höweling explains his impressing accomplishment. The 2.000 Hildesheim cathedral-stollens were piled up to a huge stollen with a weight of one ton finally.
About a „terrific mission“ of Höweling bishop Norbert Trelle spoke at the selling of the first stollen. He wished, that this commitment would be contagious and thanked in the name of the diocese for the hardworking baking-team. Then the 2.000 poundpieces had to be unloaded off the lorry and to change at the customers against money. Next to the minister of state the retired suffragan bishop and cathedral-dean Hans-Georg Koitz and Dr. Konrad Deufel as chairman of the cathedral-construction-society helped to give away the heavy freight. Godehard Höweling charges seven euros for a cathedral-stollen about 500 gramme. Secret ingredients and a good idea have their price after all.
