A new sheet alamanac with photographs supports the cathedral-restoration

Hildesheim (bph) It is not as huge as the original, but just as brilliant: the new sheet almanac of Hildesheim's diocese. Twelve fotos lead through the year. They show details from Bernward's door of the Hildesheim cathedral. A part from the purchase price of 48,50 € is spended for the cathedral-restoration.

Many people know Bernward's door, which was casted for the Hildesheim cathedal about the second last millennium by bishop Bernward, who was canonized later. But only few people came as near to the reliefs, which show scenes out of the Old and New Testament, as the prestigious photografer prof. Manfred Zimmermann from Hannover. With a skilful artist's glance he found twelve worth-while details and put it in a close up view on highgloss paper. Whereas the year cleverly starts with a detail from the relief "Creation of Man", it ends with Maria, who shows her newborn child to the Wise Men. Between there is the whole range of biblical narrations, from the Fall of Man to Abel's sacrifice till Jesus's birth and death. "The photographs show quite close single statures, their posture and their facial expressions. At their detailed contemplation you can sympathize with the addiction the statures were made, especially the expressive faces", vicar general Dr. Werner Schreer writes in the foreword of the sheet almanac.

All photographs are large sized and in black-and-white. As there is only written the month on the sheets but no days you can use the sheet almanac every year.

The calendar "Bernward's door in St. Mary's cathedral in Hildesheim" is available in the cathedral-shop at the entrance of the 1000 years of age rosetree or in the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum. Besides it can be obtained at the internetshop regarding the cathedral-restoration. There the calendar ekes the wide variety of goods, which includes books and organ-CDs and also chocolate, candles and glasses cloths with motifs of the cathedral and the 1000 years of age rosetree.
